What road tax costs once your car is past 10 years old, and how much extra you would pay over a 5-year or 10-year COE renewal.
Once a car is more than 10 years old, LTA adds a surcharge to its normal road tax. It starts at 10% in the 11th year and rises by 10 points a year to 50% from the 15th year onwards. A renewed COE therefore comes with a road tax bill that goes up every year for the first five years of the renewal, then stays at the 50% level.
| Car age | Surcharge | 1,598cc petrol car, a year |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 10 years | None | $742 |
| 11th year | 10% | $816 |
| 12th year | 20% | $890 |
| 13th year | 30% | $964 |
| 14th year | 40% | $1,038 |
| 15th year onwards | 50% | $1,113 |
For a petrol or hybrid car, the six-monthly road tax comes from engine capacity using LTA's banded formula, multiplied by 0.782. A 1,598cc car comes to about $742 a year before any surcharge. Electric cars are charged on power rating in kW, plus a flat additional component. Diesel cars also pay a special tax, which this calculator leaves out.
