Compare the yearly cost of keeping your car on a renewed COE at the October 2026 PQP with the cost of buying another car.
A rough guide. It leaves out insurance, fuel and finance costs on both sides, and allows $800 a year for maintenance on the replacement car.
Keeping your car costs the PQP ($128,715 for Cat A and $131,616 for Cat B in October 2026, half that for a 5-year renewal), plus the PARF rebate you give up by not deregistering, plus road tax with the over-10-years surcharge, plus what you expect to spend on repairs. The PQP, rebate and road tax are spread over the years the renewal gives you.
Replacing it costs the price of the next car less what it is worth when you sell it, spread over the same number of years, plus normal road tax and a maintenance allowance of $800 a year.
The PARF rebate you give up is taken as 50% of the ARF you enter. That is the rate for a car between 9 and 10 years old on a COE from before the second February 2023 bidding exercise, which covers most cars reaching renewal now. If yours differs, the PARF rebate calculator gives the exact percentage.
Insurance, fuel and finance costs are left out on both sides, because they vary by car, by driver and by how you pay. A newer car may also be cheaper to run. For the full comparison read renew your COE or scrap the car, or see the monthly on the COE renewal calculator.
