The full cost of renewing

The monthly is only part of it. Add your car's running costs to see what renewing costs per year of road time, then set it against a new or used car. Fields left blank count as $0.

How it's worked out: the renewal uses the full PQP for 10 years or half for 5 years, at 2.58% flat (2.80% for a 10-year renewal over more than 7 years), with the monthly rounded up. Road tax on a first renewal rises from 10% to 50% over the first five years, and stays at 50% for a car already past 15. Total interest is the monthly times the number of months, less the amount financed. Cost per year is the total divided by the years of road time. Insurance is left out on both sides. Figures for the other car are assumptions you can change, not quotes.

Questions

The amount financed is the full PQP for a 10-year renewal, or half of it for a 5-year renewal, less any downpayment. Interest is flat: 2.58% a year, or 2.80% a year if a 10-year renewal is spread over more than 7 years, subject to lender approval. A 10-year renewal financed for the maximum runs 118 months. The monthly is rounded up to the next dollar.
It's an estimate on this month's PQP. Your final rate and tenure are set by the lender after they assess you and the car. We confirm the figures in writing before you sign anything.
A flat rate charges interest on the full amount for the whole loan, even as you pay it down, so the effective interest rate (EIR) is roughly 1.8 to 1.9 times the flat rate. Ask us for the EIR on your quote.
It adds the running costs of keeping the car: road tax with the surcharge for cars over 10 years, maintenance, any repairs you expect, and the PARF rebate you give up by renewing. It then divides the total by the years of road time you get, so you can set renewing against a new or used car, with fuel or charging costs if you want them.
If you deregister a car at its 10-year mark, you get a PARF rebate back. For a car on a COE from before the 2nd February 2023 exercise, that's 50% of the ARF it paid. Renewing means giving that rebate up, so the calculator adds it to the cost of renewing. After 10 years there's no PARF rebate left, so a car that has been renewed before has nothing to give up.
Unless you enter your own figures: a 40% downpayment, a 7-year car loan at an assumed flat rate (2.48% with 30% or more down, 2.78% with 10% to 30%, 3.98% below that), 10 years of use for a new car, and a PARF rebate at 10 years of 5% of the ARF, capped at $30,000, for a car registered from February 2026. A used PARF car is kept to its 10-year mark and a used COE car to its COE expiry. Every assumption can be changed.
The quick calculator at the top covers the loan only. The in-depth calculator adds road tax, including the surcharge that starts at 10% in a car's 11th year and rises to 50% from its 15th. Insurance is left out on both sides. See our guide on running a car over 10 years.
