Renewing the COE doesn't change the car's age. Here is what road tax, inspection, insurance and maintenance look like from year 11, and how to price them in.
Once a car in Singapore is more than 10 years old, LTA adds a road tax surcharge of 10%, rising 10 points a year to 50% from year 15. Private cars go for inspection every year instead of every 2 years, and road tax cannot be renewed until the car passes. Insurance is still compulsory, but cover options can narrow and premiums tend to rise.
Renewing the COE keeps your car legally on the road, but the car's age still counts. From the day it is more than 10 years old, four things change: road tax picks up a surcharge, inspections go from every 2 years to every year, insurance gets more selective, and the maintenance list gets longer.
None of these is a reason on its own to scrap a good car. Together they decide whether renewing is cheaper than replacing, so they belong in the sum before you pay the PQP.
The road tax surcharge rises by 10% of base road tax each year after year 10, up to 50%. Inspection becomes annual. Insurance cover narrows and premiums tend to rise. A sound car can still be the cheaper choice; a car with a big repair coming often is not.
LTA charges a surcharge on top of the normal road tax for any vehicle more than 10 years old. It is a percentage of your car's road tax and steps up each year:
| Car age | Surcharge on road tax | Example: 1,598cc petrol (about $742/yr base) |
|---|---|---|
| More than 10 years | 10% | About $74 extra a year |
| More than 11 years | 20% | About $148 |
| More than 12 years | 30% | About $222 |
| More than 13 years | 40% | About $297 |
| More than 14 years | 50% | About $371, every year after |
The base figure in that example comes from LTA's road tax formula for a 1,598cc petrol car. Bigger engines pay more, and the surcharge scales with them. Over a full 10-year renewal the surcharge adds up to about four years' worth of base road tax; over a 5-year renewal it is about one and a half years' worth.
You can renew road tax for 6 or 12 months. Letting it lapse means late renewal fees, and driving a car without valid road tax is an offence with a fine of up to $2,000. To see the figure for your own car, use our road tax surcharge calculator.
Periodic inspection checks that a car is still roadworthy. How often you go depends on the vehicle and its age:
| Vehicle | 3 to 10 years old | More than 10 years old |
|---|---|---|
| Private car | Every 2 years | Annually |
| Motorcycle or scooter | Annually | Annually |
| Goods vehicle | Annually | Every 6 months |
Private cars under 3 years old do not need periodic inspection. Since 1 January 2025, chauffeured private hire cars over 10 years old go every 6 months. LTA sends an inspection notice about 3 months before your road tax expires, and road tax cannot be renewed until outstanding prerequisites like inspection and insurance are met. So a failed inspection holds up your road tax until the fault is fixed.
The practical effect is that from year 11 an inspector looks at your brakes, lights, emissions, tyres and underside once a year. Wear that might have waited another year now has to be sorted on schedule.
You must keep your car insured for the whole period you pay road tax, so cover is not optional. What changes is the terms you are offered. In general:
Ask your current insurer for a renewal quote early, then compare at least one other. If comprehensive cover matters to you, confirm it is available for the full renewal period, not just the first year.
Every car ages differently, but by year 10 a few items come up again and again. None of these is guaranteed. They are the ones worth asking a mechanic about before you decide:
Check whether a large, known repair falls inside the first year or two of the renewal.
Add the costs that only exist because the car is over 10, then put them next to the PQP and what a replacement would cost.
If those add up to a few thousand dollars a year on a sound car, renewing is often cheaper than replacing, because a replacement asks for a full COE plus the car. If a major repair is due on top, the answer often flips. That is when it makes sense to compare with deregistering in our renew or scrap guide, or to take a 5-year renewal and give the car a shorter, cheaper last stretch.

When a customer is weighing up a car past 10, we lay the PQP, the estimated monthly at a few tenures and the rebate you would give up side by side, so you can compare them with the year-11 costs and decide. Customers who renew with us get a free health check at our partner workshop, credit of $200 to $250 toward a one-year engine and gearbox warranty, and 8% off car insurance.
